Introduction: Market You Can’t See
Daily 42% of US stock volume goes through dark pools - private exchanges where Goldman Sachs and BlackRock trade millions shares without showing orders. You don’t see it on chart. You don’t see it on order book. Yet they decide whether S&P 500 goes up or down.
28 January 2021 GameStop rises 400% in one day. Why? Because GEX (Gamma Exposure) reaches -12 billion. Market makers must buy shares for every 1% rise, which pumps price, which forces them to buy more. Infinite loop - gamma squeeze.
In 2026, 0DTE (options expiring today) account for 55% of all SPX options volume. They create intraday trends, not your technical analysis.
If you don’t understand DIX and GEX, you trade market you don’t see. It’s like playing poker not seeing opponent’s cards who sees yours.

1. Dark Pools and DIX - Where Institutions Hide Buying
What is dark pool?
Dark pool is private exchange (e.g., Sigma X Goldman Sachs, CrossFinder Credit Suisse) where institutions trade outside public order book. Why? To not move price. If BlackRock wanted to buy 5 million AAPL shares on NASDAQ, price would spike +5% before they buy. In dark pool they buy quietly at average daily price.
DIX - Dark Index
DIX created by Squeezemetrics. Formula:
DIX = (Volume_(dark_pools^(marked\ as\ buy/Volume_(dark_pools^(total × 100%
Simplification: DIX shows % of dark pool volume that is buying.
- DIX > 48% = institutions accumulate (buy in dark pools)
- DIX < 40% = institutions distribute (sell in dark pools)
- DIX 45% = neutral
Contrarian interpretation:
High DIX during market drop = institutions buy fear = bullish. This was signal March 2020, Dec 2018, Oct 2022.
Low DIX during rise = institutions sell greed = bearish.
| DIX | Market | Signal |
|---|---|---|
| >50% + price drops | Accumulation in fear | Strong BUY |
| 45-50% + price rises | Healthy bull, institutions support | Hold long |
| <42% + price rises | Distribution in greed | Prepare for correction |
| <38% + price rises strongly | Euphoria, institutions exit | Sell |
Example PLN/USD: WIG20 drops -8% in week, DIX S&P 500 (proxy for global sentiment) jumps from 44% to 51%. Despite drop, smart money buys. Week later WIG20 bounces +6%.
2. GEX - Gamma Exposure Human Language
Gamma - reminder
Call option has delta 0.50. When stock rises 1 PLN, delta rises e.g. to 0.55. This delta change is gamma = 0.05.
Market maker (MM) who sold you call must hedge: buys 0.50 shares. When stock rises and delta goes to 0.55, must buy additional 0.05 shares. When falls, must sell.
GEX is sum of all such hedges.
Positive GEX vs Negative GEX
Imagine 2 worlds:
Positive GEX (positive gamma):
MM have lots long gamma (clients sold them options? Simplify: lot OI on OTM calls and puts). When price rises, MM must SELL (because positive gamma = sell rips, buy dips) - stabilizes market. Market is “pinned”, range-bound, low volatility.
Negative GEX (negative gamma):
MM have short gamma (clients bought many ATM options). When price rises, MM must BUY more, pumping price. When falls, must SELL, deepening drop. Fuel for trends and squeezes. Market unstable, explosive.
| GEX | MM State | What MM does on rise | Market effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Positive (+5B) | Long gamma | Sells shares | Pin, consolidation, low vol |
| Negative (-5B) | Short gamma | Buys shares | Trend, high vol, possible squeeze |
| Near 0 | Neutral | Does little | No barrier, market can jump |
3. GEX Formula and Interpretation
GEX = Σ_(all\ options Gamma_i × OI_i × 100 × SpotPrice × Sign
Where Sign = +1 for MM long gamma, -1 for short gamma (depends who bought option - clients vs MM). Squeezemetrics simplifies sign.
Simplified GEX per strike:
GEX_(strike = Gamma_(strike × OI_(strike × Price
Sum all strikes.
Levels:
- GEX > +10B on SPX = strong pin, S&P 500 will be trapped in range +/-1% for week
- GEX +2B to +8B = moderate pin
- GEX -2B to +2B = neutral / no man’s land - big moves possible
- GEX < -5B = negative gamma, explosive day, gamma squeeze possible
Where GEX creates walls?
Largest GEX at strike = “gamma wall”. Price has trouble breaking it because MM will hedge aggressively.
Example: SPX 5800 has OI 500k calls and gamma 0.08 = GEX +$40M at strike. That’s wall. Needs powerful flow to break.
4. 0DTE - How Options Expiring Today Rule Market
0DTE = Zero Days To Expiration - options expiring today (on SPX daily).
Why important:
- 55% SPX options volume is 0DTE in 2026 (vs 10% in 2020)
- High-frequency firms trade them 100k times daily
- Create intraday trends: when many 0DTE calls bought, MM must buy shares until 4 PM, pumping market into close
- Reverse: many 0DTE puts = selling into close = reversal
0DTE cycle:
09:30-11:00 - Build 0DTE position, market choppy 11:00-14:00 - MM hedge, trend forms 14:00-16:00 - “0DTE ramp” - if call heavy, +1-2% in 2h. If put heavy, -1-2%
How to use:
Check CBOE 0DTE volume: call vs put. When 0DTE call volume 2x put volume morning, market likely rises into close. Enter long 12:00, sell 15:45.
Example PLN/USD: No 0DTE on WIG20, but 0DTE SPX drives WIG20 afternoon. S&P rises 1.5% via 0DTE ramp 14:00-16:00, WIG20 futures +1% despite GPW closed. Next day open higher.
5. Gamma Squeeze - GameStop, AMC, NVDA
Gamma squeeze = MM death loop:
- Price rises -> OTM calls become ATM -> delta rises -> MM buy shares -> price rises -> delta rises more…
Loop formula:
Δ Price arrow Δ Delta arrow MM_Buying = OI × Δ Delta × 100 arrow Δ Price
GameStop 28.01.2021:
- OI call $200-$300 = 1M contracts
- Gamma squeeze: GEX -12B, MM had to buy 50M shares (30% float)
- Price $76 -> $483 intraday
- Who bought $100 call for $2? Sold for $80 (+3900%). On 5,000 PLN (
$1,250) = 200,000 PLN ($50k)
NVDA May 2024:
- Before earnings: OI call $1000 = 200k, GEX -8B
- Results + beat, price $950 -> $1020 (+7%)
- MM had to buy 15M shares, pumping to $1030, then consolidation
- Trader who bought 0DTE call $1000 for 10 PLN? Worth 50 PLN hour later
6. Options Flow - How to Read Unusual Whales
Unusual Whales, FlowAlgo, Cheddar Flow - show large options transactions.
What to watch:
- Sweeps: someone buys same option on many exchanges at once = institution
- Premium >$500k in 1 trade = smart money
- Repetition: someone daily buys call on NVDA $1000 = knows something
Flow example:
Unusual Whales: AAPL $1.2M calls $230 2 weeks, sweep, 10:42 AM. Price AAPL $228. 2 weeks later AAPL $235, call +120%.
Does flow always work? No. 50% are hedges. But when you see 5 large call sweeps on one ticker in 2 days, it’s signal.
| Flow type | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Call sweep, premium $1M+, OTM 5-10% | Bullish, aggressive | Buy stock / call |
| Put sweep, large premium, OTM | Hedging or bearish | Be careful longs |
| Call block (off exchange) | Institution, long-term | Hold |
| Repetitive call same strike 3 days | Accumulation | Buy |
7. DIX + GEX Together - Smart Money System
Most powerful combination:
| DIX | GEX | Signal | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| High (>48%) + Positive GEX (>5B) | Institutions buy + market pinned = safe bull, low risk | Buy dips, sell premium | |
| High + Negative GEX (<-3B) | Institutions buy + explosive market = ideal trend longs | Buy breakouts, aggressive longs | |
| Low (<40%) + Positive GEX | Institutions sell but market pinned = bull trap, distribution | Don’t buy, prepare shorts | |
| Low + Negative GEX | Institutions sell + explosive market = crash possible | Hedge, buy puts, reduce longs |
March 2020: DIX 52% + GEX -10B = High + Negative = ideal trend long (bounce +70%) Dec 2021: DIX 39% + GEX +12B = Low + Positive = distribution, bull top
8. Why It Matters for Traders?
- You see invisible: You know where MM have gamma walls - you don’t place stop loss where GEX wall is.
- You understand intraday: 0DTE explains why S&P rises daily 15:00-16:00.
- Edge over retail: Retail looks at RSI, you see GEX -5B = market will explode regardless of RSI.
- Avoid squeeze: Don’t short stock with GEX -10B and 140% short interest (GME). Suicide.
9. Setups: How to Trade with DIX/GEX
Setup 1: DIX Accumulation Buy
Conditions:
- Market drops -5% in week
- DIX rises from 42% to 49%
- GEX negative but shrinking (from -8B to -2B) = squeezes finishing distribution Action: Buy SPY / QQQ for 30% cash (e.g., 15,000 PLN / $3,750 from 50,000). Hold 2-4 weeks.
Setup 2: GEX Pin - Income Strategy
Conditions:
- GEX >+10B SPX
- SPX in middle of large GEX wall (e.g., 5800 surrounded by 5700 and 5900)
- VIX <15
Action: Sell iron condor on SPX 7 days: shorts outside walls, collect 1% weekly. On 50,000 PLN (
$12.5k) = 500 PLN ($125)/week = 26,000 PLN (~$6.5k)/year at low risk.
Setup 3: Gamma Squeeze Hunter
Conditions:
- GEX <-5B
- Short interest >20%
- Social Galaxy >70 and rising
- Call OI 10-20% OTM very high Action: Buy call 1 week OTM for small size (1% portfolio = 500 PLN / $125 from 50k). If squeeze, +300-1000%. If not, loss 500 PLN. Risk/reward 1:5+.
10. Case Study: NVDA Gamma Squeeze 2024
Day before earnings (21.05.2024):
- NVDA price $950
- GEX NVDA -6B (source: SpotGamma)
- Call OI strike $1000 = 180k, $1050 = 120k
- DIX NVDA 48% (accumulation)
- 0DTE call volume 3x put volume
Earnings 22.05, 16:20:
Beat +10% revenue. Price in after-hours $1005 (+5.8%). Delta call $1000 jumps from 0.30 to 0.55 = MM must buy (0.25 * 180k *100) = 4.5M shares. With float 2.5B not huge, but with 0DTE + other strikes = 20M shares.
23.05 open: $1020, high $1030. Then consolidation. Gamma squeeze gave +8% extra to earnings.
Trader who played it: Bought call $1000 24.05 (week) for $18 (72 PLN). Sold at open for $55 (220 PLN) = +205% overnight. On 2,000 PLN ($500) = 6,100 PLN (~$1,525).
11. Beginner Mistakes
- Shorting in negative GEX - Fastest way to -100%. When GEX <-5B, don’t short. You can be fundamentally right, but gamma will kill you.
- Ignoring DIX because “only US” - DIX S&P 500 is global risk-on sentiment. Affects WIG20, DAX, BTC. Check it.
- Buying UVXY when GEX negative - Negative GEX = high vol = UVXY can fall despite vol because contango. Not simple hedge.
- Trading 0DTE without stop - 0DTE can zero in 2h. Max 1-2% portfolio per trade. 500 PLN (~$125) from 50k max.
- Trusting flow sources blindly - Half flow are hedges. Don’t copy blindly $1M call - may be hedge short stock. Look for repetition 3-5x.
- No distinction GEX index vs stock - GEX SPX +10B = pin on index, but your stock may have GEX -2B and be explosive. Check both.
12. Exercises, Checklist, Summary
Exercises
Exercise 1: Go to Squeezemetrics.com (free tier) and record DIX and GEX SPX for 10 days. Compare with SPX moves. Does high DIX precede rises?
Exercise 2 (PLN/USD): You have 10,000 PLN (~$2,500). Simulate Setup 2 (GEX Pin): SPX 5800, GEX +12B, walls 5700 and 5900. You sell iron condor 5700/5720 and 5880/5900 for $150 (~600 PLN). Calculate max profit, max loss, breakeven. What if SPX closes 5710?
Exercise 3: Open Unusual Whales (free tier) and find 3 tickers with call sweep >$500k today. Check their DIX (if available) and GEX (SpotGamma free). Do they have negative GEX?
Exercise 4: Analyze GME 27-28.01.2021 on SpotGamma (historical data on Twitter). GEX -12B. Calculate how many shares MM had to buy when price $100 -> $200 with OI 1M and delta 0.2->0.6. Formula: 1M 0.4100=40M shares.
Checklist DIX/GEX
Before trading:
- DIX today and 5d trend: <40% distribution, 40-48% neutral, >48% accumulation?
- GEX SPX/NDX: >+8B pin, -2+2 neutral, <-5B explosive?
- GEX of your stock: where largest wall? Near price?
- 0DTE flow today morning: call heavy or put heavy?
- Short interest of your stock: >20% + negative GEX = squeeze risk
- Unusual flow: 3+ sweeps same?
- My position vs GEX: Am I shorting into neg GEX?
Summary
- Dark pools = 42% volume. DIX = % buying in dark pools.
DIX = (Vol_(buy/Vol_(total>48% = accumulation. - GEX = sum gamma * OI.
GEX = Σ Gamma × OI × PricePositive = pin/consolidation, negative = trend/squeeze. - 0DTE = 55% of SPX options volume, rules intraday 14:00-16:00.
- Gamma squeeze = MM delta hedge loop, fuel +200-1000% moves.
- DIX + GEX together: High DIX + Negative GEX = best long setup.
- Unusual flow filter by repetition.
