Footprint, Time&Sales - reading aggression

Until now you were looking at aggregated volume: how much at a given place. Now you go down to the level of a single transaction. Footprint and Time&Sales show who the aggressor was in every transaction and where that aggression was stopped.

Until now you were looking at aggregated volume: how much at a given place. Now you go down to the level of a single transaction. Footprint and Time&Sales show who the aggressor was in every transaction and where that aggression was stopped.

This is the shift from a satellite map (Volume Profile) to a drone view that sees individual cars and the direction they are heading.

Bid vs Ask - the foundation of aggression

Every transaction has two sides:

  • Passive - the one who placed a limit order in the book and is waiting.
  • Aggressive - the one who hit the limit with a market order (paid the spread for an immediate entry).

Order Flow splits volume into:

At every price:
Volume@Ask = aggressive buyers (hit the Ask, pushed the price up)
Volume@Bid = aggressive sellers (hit the Bid, pushed the price down)

Footprint shows, for every price in the candle:
[Bid x Ask]

Example of a 5M candle:
4100.00 | 120 x 340  -> 340 aggressive buyers vs 120 sellers
4100.25 |  80 x 410  -> 410 aggressive buyers
4100.50 | 300 x 150  -> aggressive sellers in control

Total volume of 460 at 4100.00 alone would tell you nothing. The footprint says buyers were 3x more aggressive at the low of the candle.

Time&Sales (Tape) - the transaction tape

Time&Sales is a list of every transaction in real time:

Time | Price | Volume | Side (Bid/Ask)

Why do you need it?

  1. Pace: Are transactions speeding up at a given level? 100 transactions per second vs 1 per second.
  2. Size: Are large blocks of 500+ contracts appearing? That is not retail.
  3. Absorption on the tape: You see a series of 200 x Ask, 150 x Ask, 300 x Ask, but the price is not going up. Someone has placed a large limit on the Ask and is absorbing.

Example of tape reading:

TimePriceVolSideReading
10:00:014100.2512AskRetail buying
10:00:014100.2585AskAggression is rising
10:00:024100.25200AskSomeone is adding, but the price stands still
10:00:024100.25350AskA large aggressor, no progress = a limit on the Ask is absorbing
10:00:034100.0015BidPullback, the absorption worked

If you looked only at the 1M candle, you would see a doji. On the tape you see precisely where the big player defended the level.

Footprint - the key formations

Footprint arranges Time&Sales into the structure of a candle. Every formation is a behavioural pattern:

1. Stacked Imbalance:

Level | Bid x Ask
4101.00 | 400 x 20
4100.75 | 350 x 30
4100.50 | 500 x 40

Aggressive sellers (Bid) are 10x larger than buyers (Ask) across 3 levels in a row. That is a signal of supply-side initiative. You measure it as: Bid / Ask > 3.0 on 3+ levels.

2. Absorption:

4102.00 | 20 x 900
4102.25 | 15 x 1100
4102.50 | 30 x 950
The price does not rise despite 2000+ aggressive buyers.

Someone placed a huge limit on the Ask and absorbed everything. That is a defence. It usually appears at the VAH, an HVN or historical resistance.

3. Exhaustion:

At the top of an up candle:

4110.00 | 10 x 800
4109.75 | 5 x 120

First a large aggressive buying volume at the top, then no continuation at the next price. The last buyer got caught and there is nobody left to take over.

4. Unfinished Auction:

At the very top of an up candle you see:

4120.00 | 0 x 450

Zero transactions on the Bid at the top. That means buyers pushed so aggressively that nobody managed to sell. The market is not finished at that high and with 78% probability it will come back to complete the auction (transactions on the Bid will appear).

How to measure aggression without emotion

Introduce 3 numerical filters:

1. Imbalance ratio:
For long imbalance: Ask / Bid >= 3.0
For short imbalance: Bid / Ask >= 3.0

2. Absorption filter:
Volume > 150% of the average volume per level over the last 20 candles
+ no price progress of at least 2 ticks across 3 consecutive levels

3. Delta per price level:
   Delta_level = Ask - Bid
Look for divergence: the price rises, but Delta_level falls (buyers are weakening)
PatternWhat you measureEntry / Avoidance
Stacked Imbalance long3x Ask > Bid in a rowLong continuation until the imbalance breaks
Absorption at resistanceLarge Ask, the price stands stillDo not buy the breakout, wait for a Bid reaction
ExhaustionA jump in Ask at the top, then silenceClose part of the long, do not add
Unfinished Auction0 on one side at the extreme of the candleExpect a return to that level

When the plan says do not trade

  1. When the spread is 2-3x wider than normal and the Footprint shows 1 x 2, 0 x 1 volumes. That is a lack of liquidity. Every imbalance pattern is accidental, because 3 contracts vs 1 is no signal at all.
  2. When Time&Sales accelerates to >20 transactions per second in both directions with no direction. That is an HFT fight. You are not able to read the tapespeed. Switch off, wait for it to calm down and build an HVN.
  3. When you are on a news candle (the first 60 seconds after data). The Footprint will show absorption and exhaustion every 2 seconds, because the books are being pulled. Those are not real orders. The patterns are false.
  4. When the footprint is built on tick volume (CFD). A Bid/Ask split from tick volume is an estimate, not reality. Your 5:1 imbalance may be 1:1 in reality. Do not use footprint for a precise entry without real volume.

The mistakes that cost the most

1. Trading every imbalance as a signal. In a slow market 50 x 5 is a 10:1 imbalance, but that is only 55 contracts. That is noise. Filter by a minimum absolute volume: for example only imbalances where the smaller side has >80 contracts on ES, >20 on FDAX.

2. Ignoring the Volume Profile context. An imbalance in the middle of the Value Area matters 10x less than an imbalance at the VAL/VAH or at an LVN. In the centre of Value every imbalance ends in rotation.

3. Trying to catch absorption against the daily trend without delta confirmation. You see large absorption at resistance, but the daily delta is +50k contracts on the buy side. A large player absorbing may be only a temporary delay in a strong trend. You will get run over.

4. Looking at the Footprint instead of the price. The Footprint is there to assess the reaction AT a level. If you look at the footprint in isolation from the POC, VAH or HVN, you are analysing noise. Level first, footprint second.

Measurable exercise

  1. Open Footprint 5M + Time&Sales on one market (e.g. Nasdaq futures).
  2. For 5 days mark only 2 patterns: Stacked Imbalance (3 levels) and Absorption (no progress despite >300% avg volume).
  3. For every pattern write down:
    • Location vs yesterday’s VA/HVN
    • Absolute volume
    • What happened 5 candles later? (continuation of at least 0.4 ATR or a return)
  4. After 50 markings calculate:
    • The success rate of Imbalance in a trend aligned with the daily delta vs against it
    • The success rate of Absorption at the edges of VA vs in the middle of VA
Table:
Date/Time | Pattern | Level vs VA | Absolute vol | Delta at the level | Result after 5 candles | Aligned with the D trend?

Goal: to prove that absorption at the edge of the VA has a >60% success rate as a reaction zone, and in the middle of the VA <45%.

Test yourself

  1. What does the “150 x 20” print on the footprint show, and who was the aggressor?
  2. How do you tell absorption from exhaustion on the Time&Sales tape?
  3. What is Stacked Imbalance and what threshold value would you adopt for ES?
  4. What is an Unfinished Auction and why does the price come back to it?
  5. Why is a footprint on CFD/tick volume misleading?

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to watch every transaction on Time&Sales? No. Tapespeed is too high. Use Time&Sales as a filter: turn on a sound or an alert for large blocks (>200 contracts) and look only when the price is at your Volume Profile level. You do not scalp on the tape alone without a level.

Which footprint should I choose: Bid x Ask, Delta or Volume? Start with Bid x Ask. That is the raw data. Delta is a derivative that loses the information about where the aggression took place. The best footprint is Bid x Ask with delta colouring at the level.

Does a large volume on the Bid always mean selling? Yes, it means aggressive selling (a market sell into the Bid). But it does not mean the price will fall. If a hidden buy limit (iceberg) sits behind that large Bid, then it is absorption and the price will rise. That is why you have to watch the price progress, not just the volume.

How many imbalance levels in a row is a strong signal? A measurable standard: 3 levels is the minimum stack, 5+ levels is a very strong initiative. But location matters most. 3 levels at the VAL with 1000 contracts each is more than 7 levels in the middle of Value with a volume of 20.
