Delta, CVD and absorption - when aggression stops working
The aggressor is the one who pays. Delta tells you who paid more. CVD shows whether that paying produces an effect over the whole session. Absorption is the moment when the aggressor pays, pays and... doesn't get the goods.

If Footprint is drone photography, Delta and CVD are the time-lapse film showing who is winning the war of attrition.
Delta - net aggression measure
Delta is the difference between the volume of aggressive buyers and aggressive sellers.
Delta = Volume@Ask - Volume@Bid
Positive delta: more aggressive buyers
Negative delta: more aggressive sellers
Example candle:
Bid Vol = 400, Ask Vol = 900 → Delta = +500
Interpretation: 500 more contracts were bought aggressively.
Delta accumulated over the session = the sum of deltas from all candles
What Delta is NOT:
- It is not an indicator of buyers vs sellers overall (every transaction has both sides).
- It is not price direction directly. Price can rise with negative delta if someone placed a large limit at the Ask and is passively selling (supply absorption).
Delta/Price divergences - the single most important signal
| Price | Delta | Read |
|---|---|---|
| Rising highs | Falling Delta highs | Aggressive buyers losing strength, distribution, risk of a short |
| Falling lows | Rising Delta lows (less negative) | Aggressive sellers losing strength, accumulation |
| New price high | Negative Delta on that candle | Someone is passively selling the high (limit), absorption |
| New price low | Positive Delta on that candle | Someone is passively buying the low, absorption |
Formula for move strength:
Delta Efficiency = Delta / total Volume
Delta Efficiency > 0.25 is a strongly directional move (25% aggressor edge)
Delta Efficiency < 0.10 is a rotational, choppy move with no dominance
CVD - Cumulative Volume Delta
CVD sums delta over time. One chart that shows the whole day of battle.
Why CVD?
- Trend confirmation: If price is rising and CVD is rising, the trend is healthy - aggressive buyers are in control.
- Warning: Price is rising but CVD is falling or flat (bearish divergence). Market buyers are no longer pushing, someone is selling from the top with limits.
- Exhaustion measurement: CVD reaches the session extreme but price no longer makes a new high. That is transfer.
Example session on ES:
- 9:30-11:00: Price +20 points, CVD +30k, Delta Efficiency +0.22 -> healthy trend.
- 11:00-12:30: Price +5 points, CVD -5k, Delta Efficiency -0.05 -> buyers stopped buying aggressively, distribution in the HVN.
- 12:30: price makes a new session high on CVD 10k lower than the previous high -> high risk of a reversal or a deep correction to the POC.
CVD = sum(Delta) from the start of the session/week
CVD Divergence:
If High_price(n) > High_price(n-1) AND High_CVD(n) < High_CVD(n-1) → Buyer weakness
CVD Trend Filter:
If CVD > SMA(CVD, 20 periods) and rising → long-only filter for scalps
Absorption - the key to reading the big players
Absorption is a situation where a large aggressive volume does not translate into price progress. Someone on the other side has placed a huge limit order (or an iceberg) and is absorbing everything.
How to measure it on Delta and Footprint:
Supply absorption (sellers being absorbed - bullish):
- Price is flat or falling slightly.
- Very large volume on the Bid (aggressive selling).
- Delta strongly negative (e.g. -2000).
- But price does not make a new low, wicks from below.
- On the footprint: high Bid, low Ask, but price does not fall.
Who is buying? A Bid limit iceberg. A big player is passively accumulating supply.
Demand absorption (buyers being absorbed - bearish):
- Price is flat at resistance.
- Very large volume on the Ask (aggressive buying).
- Delta strongly positive (+2500).
- Price does not make a new high.
- Right after that negative delta appears and price drops fast.
Who is selling? An Ask limit. Someone is distributing a block.
| Absorption type | Delta | Price | Volume | What happens next |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Supply at the low | Strongly negative | Does not fall | High | Rise, because sellers are exhausted |
| Demand at the high | Strongly positive | Does not rise | High | Drop, because buyers are exhausted |
| Two-sided in the HVN | Near 0 but high volume | Rotation | Very high | Consolidation, Value building |
Iceberg - hidden absorption
Exchanges let you place an order that shows only 10% of its size, with the rest hidden. On the footprint you see:
Level 4100.00: 50 x 200
Refresh: 50 x 200
Refresh: 50 x 200
...
10 times - 2000 total on the Ask, but the limit is still there.
That is an iceberg on the Ask. Your Order Flow tool should flag it with an Iceberg Detector. If you see a limit constantly refreshing at one level, that is a defence level and you should not play the breakout without it being taken out.
When the plan says do not trade
- When Delta and CVD move in the opposite direction to the Volume Profile. Example: the POC and VAH are rising (the market accepts higher), but CVD falls all day. You have a contradiction between value (time+volume) and aggression. That means large blocks are being transferred with limits (e.g. funds). Do not trade mean reversion or trend - wait for the resolution.
- When you see extreme delta (>3x the average) but price sits still for >5 minutes. That is full absorption. The risk of entering is huge, because you do not know how much that limit still has left. Professionals wait until absorption breaks and an imbalance appears on the opposite side.
- When CVD is flat for >2 hours in the middle of the day. The market has no aggressor. It is a neutral, rotational day. Every CVD divergence is false, because there is no energy.
- When the delta of one 1M candle has >2000 contracts but the next has 10. That is a clearing algorithm. You have to smooth delta (e.g. a 10-candle SMA), otherwise you will react to noise.
The mistakes that cost the most
1. Using delta as an indicator where a cross of 0 = a signal. Delta oscillates around zero. A zero cross on a 1M candle has no value whatsoever. What counts is delta at key levels and divergence vs price.
2. Ignoring total volume when reading delta. A delta of +100 on a volume of 120 is an 83% edge. A delta of +100 on a volume of 5000 is 2% - noise. Always calculate Delta Efficiency, not the absolute delta alone.
3. Trading absorption against the dominant POC. You see demand absorption (bearish) and you want to short, but you are at the weekly VAL and the monthly POC. A large Ask limit at intraday resistance may only be a correction inside a huge value accumulation. Context beats a 1M pattern.
4. Confusing absorption with a lack of liquidity. If there are 5 contracts on the Ask and 200 on the Bid and price does not fall, that is not absorption, just an empty book on the Ask. Real absorption requires large volume on both sides but no progress. The minimum absorption volume has to be >150% of the average at the level.
Measurable exercise
- On a single session (e.g. 14:30-21:00 DAX or ES) open: 5M Footprint + CVD + Delta per candle.
- Mark every place where Delta Efficiency >0.25 and where Delta Efficiency <0.10.
- Mark the 3 largest CVD vs price divergences (price high higher, CVD high lower and vice versa).
- For each divergence write down: the distance from VAH/VAL/POC and the outcome after 60 minutes (continuation vs a reversal of at least 0.5 ATR).
- At the end build a statistic: how many CVD divergences at the edges of the Value Area end in a reversal of >50% of the range.
Absorption measurement table:
Time | Level | Delta | Vol total | Delta Eff. | Price makes progress? Y/N | Absorption type | Reaction after 30 min
After 20 marked absorptions you will know whether you can tell a real limit defence from ordinary rotation.
Check yourself
- Give the formula for Delta and Delta Efficiency. Why does a delta of +500 alone mean nothing?
- What does CVD show and how do you tell a healthy trend from a CVD-price divergence?
- Describe the difference between supply and demand absorption - how do you recognise it on delta and price?
- What is an iceberg and how do you detect it on Time&Sales?
- Name 2 situations in which a CVD divergence is unreliable.
Frequently asked questions
Is Delta available on GPW stocks? Yes, if you have access to order book data that distinguishes transactions by Bid/Ask (so-called exchange data, not just price). Most professional platforms (e.g. ATAS with GPW data) show delta for stocks. On WIG20 futures it is available without any problem.
Is negative Delta on a rising candle a data error? No. That is exactly absorption. Price rises because someone is passively lifting Bid limits and buying the aggressive selling. The aggressive side is the sellers (negative delta), but the passive buyers are stronger and push price up with limits.
Which CVD length is best - session or weekly? For day trading: session-based, reset at midnight or at the RTH open. For swing: weekly. If you reset CVD every 1M, you lose the context of position building. Standard: CVD of the day + CVD of the week on separate panels.
Does absorption always reverse the market? No. Absorption is a fight. It can be the start of a reversal, but it can also be a pause before continuation, when a big player accumulates a block and lets price continue. A turn needs a second element: after absorption an imbalance must appear on the opposite side as confirmation that the absorber has won.
