Without a journal, trading is entertainment. With a journal, it is a business with a feedback loop. Most traders keep a trade journal (entry, exit, R). That is not enough. You need an emotion journal (what I felt, what I thought, what my body state was) and a weekly review that turns data into decisions. This lesson gives you ready-made templates.

Why does P&L alone not teach?

P&L tells you WHAT happened. It does not tell you WHY. Two -1R trades can have completely different causes: one consistent with the plan (a business cost), the other revenge trading without a stop (a system error). If you only record R, you learn to average apples with bricks.

The full picture is 3 layers:

LayerWhat you recordWhat for
TradeSetup, entry, stop, exit, R, feesCalculating EV, MaxDD
EmotionEmotion before/during/after 1-10, automatic thought, body state, Tilt_ScoreDetecting FOMO/revenge patterns, correlation with losses
ProcessWas the checklist done Y/N, was the breaker applied, Plan AdherenceWhether the problem is the system or the execution

Only the 3 layers together let you answer: “is this the system’s DD or my DD?”.

The formula for the value of a journal:

Journal_Value = Number_of_detected_patterns * Cost_avoided_in_the_future

1 detected pattern "after a sleepless night I have 60% impulsive trades" = saving 2R per month = 24R per year.

Without measurement you repeat the same mistake 12 times a year.

The emotion journal - a 2-minute template

The journal has to be short enough that you fill it in even after -2R, when you are furious. 2 minutes max per trade, 5 minutes at the end of the day.

Template per trade (paste into a file / app):

DATE: 2025-06-10
SETUP: A (trend continuation)
MARKET: EURUSD H1
RISK: 0.75% = 0.75R
ENTRY CHECKLIST: Y (5/5)
EMOTION BEFORE (1-10): 3 - calm
AUTOMATIC THOUGHT: "Setup consistent, I waited 2h"
BODY STATE: relaxed shoulders
RESULT: -1R (stop outside the structure, consistent)
EMOTION AFTER (1-10): 4 - neutral
WAS IT CONSISTENT WITH THE PLAN? Y
LESSON: business cost, I change nothing
TILT_SCORE after: 2

Template per impulsive trade (FOMO/revenge):

DATE:
SETUP: none / forced
RISK: 1.5% (increased!)
CHECKLIST: N (2/5)
EMOTION BEFORE: 7 - FOMO, chest tension 8/10
AUTOMATIC THOUGHT: "It is running away, I have to get in now"
BODY STATE: clenched jaw, shallow breathing
RESULT: -1.8R
EMOTION AFTER: 8 - anger + shame
CONSISTENT? N - FOMO
LESSON: FOMO-STOP not applied, the old pattern came back after 3 green candles
PROTOCOL FOR TOMORROW: 50% of the size, max 2 trades, a FOMO-STOP card on the monitor

Calculate every day:

Plan_Adherence_Day = Consistent / All *100%
Avg_Emotion_Day = average emotion before
Impulsive_Day = number of impulsive trades
Daily metricFormulaAlert
AdherenceConsistent/All<70% - video / recording review
Avg Emotion >6Average emotion before2 days in a row >6 - a day off, fundamentals (sleep)
Impulsive >=2Count2 days in a row >=2 - 3 days at 50% size

The weekly review - 45 minutes that decide your year

The daily review is hygiene. The weekly review is strategy. You do it once a week, at a fixed time (e.g. Friday 17:00 or Sunday 10:00), cold, with no live charts open.

The structure of a 45-minute weekly review:

MIN 0-5: THE WEEK'S STATISTICS

- Number of trades: ___
- Plan Adherence %: ___ (target >85%)
- Average R: ___
- EV for the week: ___
- MaxDD for the week / current DD from the peak %: ___
- Average Tilt_Score: ___
- Breakers triggered / applied: ___/___

MIN 5-15: TOP 3 WINS and TOP 3 LOSSES

For each:
- Was it consistent with the plan?
- What did I do well / badly in EXECUTION (not in the result)?
- What was the emotion and the body state?

MIN 15-25: PATTERNS

- When did the impulsive ones appear? (time of day, after a loss, after boredom?)
- What is the correlation: Sleep <7h vs Adherence? Emotion >6 vs Loss?
- Calculate:
FOMO_Rate = FOMO_trades / All
Revenge_Rate = Revenge_trades / All

MIN 25-35: THE DECISION FOR NEXT WEEK (max 1-2 changes, not 10)

- Does the system work? Is EV >0 after 30+ trades?
- Does the execution work? Is Adherence >85%?
- 1 thing to keep: ___
- 1 thing to improve: ___ (e.g. "100% of the ENTRY checklist" or "Zero trading after 16:00")
- Size for next week: ___ (100%, 50%, 25%, demo)

MIN 35-45: THE PLAN FOR NEXT WEEK

- Trading days: ___
- Allowed setups: A / A+B?
- Max trades per day / per week: ___
- Max weekly loss: ___ R
- Fundamentals: Sleep target ___, meditation ___ days, training ___ days
- Evidence_bank target: ___ entries

Save the review in a file weekly_review_YYYY_WW.md. After a quarter you have 12 reviews - the progress is plain to see.

Automation and tools - not Excel, a system

You do not need a complicated tool. You need a system you will follow in 90% of cases, not a perfect one you will follow in 10%.

Options:

ToolAdvantagesDisadvantages
Notion / Obsidian templateFast, tagging, chartsRequires setup
Google Sheet with 3 tabs (Trades, Emotions, Weekly)Simple, automatic EV formulasNot very mobile
Paper + penHighest retention, zero distractionsHarder to calculate correlations

KursTradera recommendation: Start with paper per trade (the 2-min template) + a weekly Google Sheet with 5 metrics. After 30 days move to Notion if you want automation.

The formula for journal compliance:

Journal_Compliance = Days with a completed journal / Trading days *100%
Target: 100% - the journal is part of the trade, not an addition. A trade without a journal = incomplete.

When the plan says: do not trade

 1. When you did not fill in yesterday’s journal and you do not know what yesterday’s Plan Adherence and Avg Emotion were. Trading without closing the feedback loop means repeating yesterday’s mistakes today. 5 minutes of journal in the morning for yesterday = an obligation. Without it the plan says: journal first, then the market.
 2. When you have not done a weekly review for 2 weeks and you “have no time”. That means you are flying on autopilot with no course correction. Autopilot in trading is a straight road to DD. 45 min a week is 0.5% of your trading time, and it saves 20% of your capital a year. The plan says: a Friday without a review = a Monday without trading until the review.
 3. When your journal shows 3 days in a row of Avg Emotion >6 and Adherence <70%, and you still want to trade full size because “it has to turn around now”. The journal is shouting: you are in a spiral. This is not the moment for a trade. It is the moment for a day off, a review and a return to the fundamentals (Lesson 03). Data > hope.

The mistakes that cost the most

Mistake 1: Keeping a journal only for losses, not for wins and days without trading. The brain then learns: journal = punishment. You start avoiding it. The journal should be kept for EVERY day - including days when you did not trade (proof of patience). That is how you build an evidence_bank and see that not trading is also execution of the plan.

Mistake 2: Recording the result instead of the process (“I entered too late” instead of “I did not do the checklist, FOMO 7/10, heart rate 110”). “I entered too late” gives you no solution. “FOMO 7/10 after 2h of staring, with no checklist” gives you a solution: a 25 min timer, breaks, a FOMO-STOP card. The more behavioural the entry, the easier it is to fix with a protocol.

Mistake 3: A weekly review with no single decision for the next week. A review that ends with “it was ok, I need to try harder” changes nothing. A review has to end with 1-2 concrete behavioural changes with a metric: “Next week, 100% of the pre-market checklist” or “Max 2 trades a day”. Without a decision it is reading history, not managing.

A measurable exercise

Goal: To implement a 2-minute journal and the first weekly review within 14 days.

Steps:

 1. Copy the per-trade template into a notebook / the file daily_journal.md. Print 20 copies.
 2. For 10 trading days fill it in after EVERY trade (including impulsive ones) and calculate daily:
Date | Trades | Adherence % | Avg Emotion | Impulsive | Journal Y/N
 1. On Friday / Sunday do the first 45-minute weekly review according to the structure above. Save the file weekly_review_2025_W24.md.

 2. Calculate:

Journal_Compliance_10d = Days with a journal / 10
Correlation_Sleep_Adherence = On days with sleep <7h, does adherence drop?
Top_Pattern = The most frequent trigger of impulsive trades (time, emotion, after a loss?)

Pass criterion: 10/10 days with a journal, 1 weekly review with 1 decision for the next week.
 1. In the following week introduce 1 change from the review and measure whether Adherence rises.

Test yourself

 1. Why is P&L alone not enough to learn from? Explain the 3 layers of the journal and their functions.
 2. Give the emotion journal template per trade - 8 mandatory fields. Why is body state just as important as emotion?
 3. Describe the structure of the 45-minute weekly review - 5 blocks. How many decisions for the next week, and why max 1-2?
 4. Calculate: in a week you had 10 trades, 3 FOMO, 2 revenge. What are the FOMO_Rate and Revenge_Rate? What does that say about your anti-tilt system?
 5. What is the difference between a loss journal and an evidence_bank? Why does keeping a journal only for losses build a negative identity?

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to record my screen for the review to make sense? You do not have to, but recording 1-2 sessions a week (e.g. OBS) speeds up pattern detection by 300%. You see your pauses, your facial expression, the moment of hesitation. If you do not record, at least take a screenshot before the entry with the stop and the checklist marked. That is proof the plan existed before the click.

What if I forget to fill in the journal after a trade? Fill it in that same day in the evening at the latest. Emotional memory fades after 24h - after 2 days you do not remember whether the FOMO was 6 or 8. Set a “Journal 5 min” reminder after the session. The rule: a trade without a journal = a trade not counted in the sample of 100. That motivates.

How long should I keep the journal? My whole life? The emotion journal - intensively for 90 days, then you can move to a light version (only days with emotion >6 or impulsive trades). The weekly review - your whole trading life, 45 min a week. It is like an aircraft inspection. Without it you fly on hope. Professional traders with 10 years of experience still do a weekly review. It is not a punishment for beginners, it is an operating standard.
