Intro: State pension gives you 1200 PLN. What about rest?

According to ZUS and OECD forecasts, replacement rate (pension / last salary) in Poland 2050 falls to 25-30%. You earn today 10,000 PLN? State pension 2500-3000 PLN. In today’s money due inflation - worth 1200 ($300). Poverty.

As trader you have edge: can multiply capital. But if whole capital holds at CFD broker and pay 19% from each profit, state eats 1/5 profit yearly. IKE and IKZE are only legal 0% tax in Poland. Not using them is giving money to tax office.

In this lesson we build your retirement glidepath and learn asset location.

1. IKE vs IKZE - Battle on Taxes

Both retirement accounts with preferences, different rules.

FeatureIKE (Individual Retirement Account)IKZE (Individual Retirement Security Account)
Yearly limit2024: 23,472 PLN ($5,868), 2025: 26,019 PLN ($6,504), 2026 forecast 28,000 PLN ($7k)2024: 9,388 PLN ($2,347), 2025: 10,407 PLN ($2,601), for self-employed 14,083 PLN 2024, 2025 ~15,611 PLN
Tax benefitNo 19% Belka tax on withdrawal after 60 and 5 years contributions, min 50% contributionsDeduction from taxable base in PIT year of contribution + no Belka on withdrawal after 65
Early withdrawal tax10%? No, keep contributions but pay 19% from profits like normal accountOn early withdrawal add to income and pay according scale 12/32% (for JDG 19% linear) - penalty
InheritanceNo inheritance tax, no BelkaNo inheritance tax, but heir pays 10% flat (beneficial)
For whomEveryone, best first choiceEspecially for 32% bracket and self-employed on scale
What can holdStocks, ETF, treasury bonds, funds - depends broker (mBank, DM BOS, XTB from 2023 offers IKE)Same

Limits formula:

`IKE_Limit = 3 * Forecast_Avg_Salary

IKZE_Limit = 1.2 * Forecast_Avg_Salary (1.8 for self-employed)

In 2025 forecast avg ~8673 PLN, hence 26,019 PLN IKE.

Math of IKZE benefit for trader at 32%:

You put 10,407 PLN into IKZE. You’re in second bracket 32%. Deduct from income.

Tax refund = 10,407 * 32% = 3,330 PLN refund in PIT. Plus save health? No only income tax. But 3.3k refund is 32% instant return Day 1. Where get 32% risk-free in one day?

For self-employed on 19% linear: Refund 10,407*19%=1,977 PLN. Still super.

2. How Much Lose Without IKE? Compound With No Tax

Assume invest 20,000 PLN (~$5k) yearly for 25y (age 35-60) in VWCE.

Taxable account: After each sale at rebalancing pay 19%. Effective net return ~6% instead of 8% gross.

FV_(taxable = 20000 * ((1+0.06)^(25 - 1/0.06 = 20000 * 54.86 = 1,097,200 PLN` before final tax. Real ~950k net (~$237k).

IKE 0% tax: Whole 8% compounds.

FV_(IKE = 20000 * ((1+0.08)^(25 - 1/0.08 = 20000 * 73.10 = 1,462,000 PLN net 100%, withdrawal after 60 exempt.

Difference: ~512,000 PLN (~$128k) more in IKE. Half million for opening account free in 15 minutes.

3. Asset Location - What Hold Where?

Asset Location is strategy WHICH assets hold on WHICH account to minimize taxes. Different from Asset Allocation (how much of what).

General US rule: Bonds with interest (tax inefficient) to tax-advantaged (IKE). Stocks (efficient) to taxable. In Poland check?

In Poland:

  • IKE/IKZE: No Belka tax. So hold there assets generating MOST tax events (dividends, frequent rebalancing, high turnover). That is: equity ETFs with dividends, ETFs you often rebalance, gold (often sold at rebalancing).
  • Taxable account: Hold Acc Buy&Hold ETF (VWCE) rarely sold, so tax deferred anyway. And individual stocks held for years.

Asset Location Table for trader:

AssetWhere bestWhy?
VWCE Acc (buy&hold 20y)Can be taxable - low turnoverNo tax until sale in 20y anyway
SXR8 / VUAA Acc but quarterly rebalancedIKEFrequent sale at rebalancing - in IKE 0% tax
4GLD goldIKEOften rebalanced, profits taxed 19% - in IKE 0%
AGGH / DTLE bondsIKEInterest taxed - in IKE 0%
Single stocks growth (e.g. NVDA)Taxable if long term, IKE if tradingIf you trade - better in IKE because no tax from each sale
BTC ETCIKE (if broker offers) - XTB has BTC ETC in IKEOtherwise tax 19% from each close

Is active trading in IKE allowed? Yes, as long as broker offers stocks/ETF in IKE. You can day-trade stocks in IKE, but not CFD (CFD derivative, cannot be in IKE). XTB, mBank, BOS allow stocks and ETF in IKE. Day trading stocks in IKE = 0% tax on profit. Holy Grail for stock trader.

NOTE: Futures and CFD cannot be in IKE/IKZE. Only spot stocks/ETF/bonds.

4. Glidepath - How Change Allocation With Age

Glidepath is path how your stock allocation falls with age. When young you can have 90% stocks because horizon 30y. When 58, need 40-50% bonds.

Simple linear formula:

`Equity%(age) = 90% - (age - 30) * Glidepath_(slope)

Where slope = (90% - 40%)/(60-30) = 50%/30 = 1.6667% per year.

Thus:

Equity\%(age) = 90\% - (age-30)*1.6667\%

Examples:

  • 30: 90% stocks
  • 34: 90-4*1.6667=83.33% stocks
  • 45: 90-15*1.6667=65% stocks
  • 60: 40% stocks

This is “glidepath to retirement”. More conservative than 110-age.

For trader propose 2 glidepaths:

  • Aggressive (if have large emergency and trading as income):
Equity\% = 100\% - (age-30)*1.333\%` -> 30yo 100%, 60yo 60%
  • Conservative (if retirement main hedge): `Equity% = 90% - (age-30)*1.6667%

5. Strategy Table For Different Ages - Concrete Numbers

Bonds increase because protect capital year before payout.

In USD: at $125k retirement capital, 30yo: $112.5k VT, $12.5k GLDM etc.

6. How Combine Active Trading With IKE?

You have 3 options:

Option 1 - Pure Retirement (recommended 80%): IKE/IKZE = 100% passive ETF (VWCE, AGGH, 4GLD), quarterly rebalancing. Trading = separate taxable with CFD/stocks. No mixing. Least tempting to gamble retirement money.

Option 2 - Hybrid Active in IKE: In IKE hold 70% passive ETF + 30% for active stock trading (not CFD). E.g. 70% VWCE + 30% cash for catching opportunities (crash -20% and buy NVDA, MSFT). Profit 0% tax. Requires strong discipline.

Option 3 - Trading as whole retirement (risky): Whole IKE is stock trading account. Swing trading US stocks. Theoretically 0% tax from each trade super. Practically 90% traders lose, so lose retirement. Available only for traders with documented track record 3+ years TWR >15%.

Math Option 2: You have IKE 100k. 70k VWCE + 30k cash. March 2025 crash -25%. Use 30k cash to buy SXR8 at bottom. Then bounce +40%. 30k -> 42k. Profit 12k 0% tax. If on taxable account, tax 19% = 2280 PLN loss.

7. Why Important for Trader?

Because trader without retirement plan ends as 70-year-old trading for 500 PLN monthly because must.

Trading gives cashflow today. IKE/IKZE gives freedom tomorrow. If don’t fund IKE at 34, lose 26y of 0% tax compounding. Not recoverable by trading.

Second: psychology. Knowing retirement grows in background, you don’t feel pressure to from EACH trading year live and save for retirement. Retirement AUTOMATICALLY saved.

8. Case Study: Marek 34, Target 1M PLN / $250k at 60

Profile: Retirement capital today: 75k PLN ($18.75k) (from lesson 01). Yearly contribution: max IKZE 10.5k + max IKE 26k = 36.5k yearly ($9.1k).

Return assumption: Glidepath 83% stocks -> 40% stocks avg ~7% real (5% after inflation).

Calculate FV with current capital and contributions:

FV = 75000*(1.07)^(26 + 36500*((1.07)^(26-1/0.07

(1.07)^(26 ≈ 5.807

FV = 75000*5.807 + 36500*(5.807-1)/0.07 = 435525 + 36500*68.67 = 435525 + 2,506,455 = 2,941,980 PLN

Nominally 2.9M PLN at 60. Real after inflation 2.5% (~1.9x prices): 1.55M in today’s zloty ($387k). Goal 1M beaten 2x.

If not IKE/IKZE but taxable (6% net via taxes):

FV_{taxable} = 75000*1.06^{26} + 36500*(1.06^{26}-1)/0.06
1.06^{26}=4.549
=341175 + 36500*59.15 = 341175+2,158,975=2.5M PLN` minus final tax ~300k → 2.2M. Difference 700k PLN benefit IKE/IKZE.

In USD: ~$735k vs $550k after tax.

9. Beginner Mistakes

  1. “I’ll open IKE when I earn more”: Each year without IKE lost limit (doesn’t fully transfer - IKE yearly limit expires, IKZE too). That’s rejecting 32% instant return.
  2. Keeping everything in treasury bonds in IKE “because safe”: Polish treasury bonds EDO give 6-7% but inflation 5% + no diversification. For 26y must have stocks.
  3. Withdrawal from IKE before 60 because “trading opportunity”: Lose ability 0% tax forever and 19% profits. Worst move.
  4. No automation: Manual contributions “if left”. Won’t be left. Set automatic 1 day after salary: 2168 PLN to IKE (26019/12) and 867 PLN to IKZE.

10. Practical Exercises

Exercise 1: Check IKE/IKZE limits this year gov.pl. Calculate how much you can contribute and refund from IKZE in your bracket. Exercise 2: Calculate glidepath: how much % stocks should have at 34, 40, 50, 60 per formula 90%-(age-30)*1.6667%. Exercise 3: Design asset location: you have 50k in IKE and 50k taxable. Where place VWCE, 4GLD, AGGH to minimize tax? Justify. Exercise 4: Open IKE account at XTB/mBank/BOŚ if not have. 15 minutes changes life.

11. Checklist

  • Checked current IKE and IKZE limits 2025/2026
  • Calculated return from IKZE in my bracket (32% or 19%)
  • Have opened IKE and IKZE (separate accounts, can have both)
  • Set automatic: IKE yearly limit /12 monthly 1 day after salary
  • Know glidepath: stocks % = 90%-(age-30)*1.6667%
  • Decided asset location: what in IKE, what taxable
  • Chose strategy trading vs retirement: pure retirement vs hybrid 70/30 in IKE
  • Calculated FV retirement to 60 - enough for goal?
  • Don’t touch IKE before 60

Summary and Next Steps

IKE and IKZE is only free tax premium in Poland. For trader it’s 0% tax on trading profits if trading stocks in IKE, and 32% instant return in IKZE.

Glidepath Equity\%=90\%-(age-30)*1.6667\% gives mechanical path without guessing.

Don’t postpone. State won’t be enough. Every 1000 PLN in IKE today at 34 ~7600 PLN at 60 at 8%. Every 1000 PLN invested at 50 only 2150 PLN. Time more important than amount.

In last lesson we build your portfolio dashboard: TWR vs MWR, Sharpe, Sortino, Calmar, CAGR. Learn to measure if you are really good or just lucky in bull.
