Intro: Two ETFs, Same Index, Difference 12,000 PLN on 100k in 15 Years
Take S&P 500:
- VUSA (Vanguard S&P 500 Dist) - IE00B3XXRP09, distributing, TER 0.07%, domicile Ireland
- VUAA (Vanguard S&P 500 Acc) - IE00BFMXXD54, accumulating, TER 0.07%, domicile Ireland
Look identical? For Pole on taxable account difference after 15 years at 100k PLN (~$25k) and 8% return ~12,000 PLN in favor of Acc, due to tax deferral.
This chapter is most important cost chapter of entire course. Most money leaks here.

1. UCITS - Your Protective Umbrella
UCITS standard regulating funds in EU. Gives:
- Leverage limit, diversification (max 35% in one issuer)
- Protection against custodian bank failure
- KID document in Polish
- Easy settlement in PL
Why not US ETFs (e.g. SPY, QQQ)? Since 2018 brokers in EU cannot sell US ETFs to retail without KID/PRIIPS. XTB, DEGIRO block SPY. Even if buy via IBKR, you have WHT 30% on dividends (Poland-USA treaty 15% but need W-8BEN and still pay), estate tax risk 40% above $60k after death, and no accumulating.
For Pole: only UCITS. Period.
US investor can buy US ETFs, but UCITS still interesting for tax.
2. Acc vs Dist - Mechanics
Distributing (Dist): Pays dividends to your account. E.g. you have 1000 units VUSA, get 2x year dividend ~$0.5 per unit = $500. Must settle in PIT-38 (tax 19% dividend). Then must manually reinvest (commission cost, spread, time).
Accumulating (Acc): Dividend automatically reinvested inside fund. ETF price grows. No cash. No tax until sale.
Tax effect in Poland:
- Dist: Pay 19% from EACH dividend yearly. Reduces capital working on compounding.
- Acc: Pay 19% only at sale from TOTAL gain. You have tax deferral. Like free loan from tax office.
Mathematically:
FV_(Dist = PV * (1 + r*(1 - t_(div))^n ( (simplified)
FV_{Acc} = PV * (1 + r)^n * (1 - t_{cg}) + PV*t_{cg}
Where t_div=19%, t_cg=19%, r=gross rate.
For r=8%, t=19%, n=15, PV=100k: Dist effectively works at 6.5%, Acc at full 8% and tax at end. Difference ~12% final capital.
In US: Acc vs Dist less important because US taxes dividends yearly even if accumulating? In UCITS Acc, you still may owe tax on accumulating? In Poland: No tax until sale for Acc. Huge benefit.
3. TER vs Tracking Difference - Hidden Costs
TER (Total Expense Ratio): Official yearly fund fee, e.g. 0.07%.
Tracking Difference (TD): Difference between index return and fund return. Contains TER + internal transaction costs + securities lending profit + tax differences.
TD = Index_Return - Fund_Return
Example: S&P 500 TR 2023: +26.29% VUSA: +26.12% TD = 26.29-26.12 = 0.17%. TER 0.07%, so extra hidden 0.10% costs.
Tracking Error is different: Std dev of TD. Smaller better.
For Pole always check TD on justetf.com > chart > tracking difference, not only TER.
4. Domicile - Why Ireland (IE) > Luxembourg (LU) for Stocks
Domicile is fund’s country. Most popular: IE, LU, DE, FR.
Why IE beats LU for stocks?
US dividends: US charges WHT from foreign funds.
- IE fund pays 15% WHT from US dividends (Ireland-USA treaty)
- LU fund pays 30% WHT (no treaty)
- DE/FR similarly 15% but other internal taxes
Difference: 15% * 1.5% dividend (yield S&P) = 0.225% yearly loss in LU vs IE fund.
Thus for ETF on US/Global stocks: always choose IE.
For bonds: LU may be OK, because no WHT on interest.
| Domicile | WHT US Dividends | WHT for Pole at Dist? | Acc benefit? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ireland IE | 15% | 0% (dividend from IE to PL 0% WHT, settle in PL 19%) | Yes, deferral PL tax |
| Luxembourg LU | 30% | 0% | Yes, but fund loses 0.225% yearly more due WHT |
| USA US | 15-30% for PL (W-8BEN) | 15% at source | No Acc in US |
For Pole on TAXABLE: IE Acc ETF is king. For IKE: IE Acc still king because 0% tax anyway but lower TD than LU.
5. Total Cost Formula
Ultimate formula to evaluate ETF:
Total_Cost = TER + TD_{extra} + Spread + FX_Cost + Tax_{effective}`
Where:
- TER: e.g. 0.07%
- TD_extra = TD - TER: hidden, e.g. 0.10%
- Spread: (Ask-Bid)/mid, VWCE ~0.07%, ZPRV ~0.30%
- FX Cost: if buy ETF in EUR having PLN, broker charges 0.2-0.5% for conversion (XTB 0.5%, DEGIRO 0.25%). Avoid buying ETF in PLN or holding EUR account.
- Tax_effective: For Dist: yield*19% yearly. For Acc: amortized. For S&P yield 1.5%: 1.5%*19%=0.285% yearly drag for Dist.
Example VUSA (Dist, IE) at XTB: TER 0.07% + TD_extra 0.10% + spread 0.07% (amort 1/5y =0.014%) + FX 0.5% (amort 0.1%) + dividend tax 0.285% = 0.569% yearly
For VUAA (Acc, IE): TER 0.07% + TD_extra 0.08% + spread 0.07% (0.014%) + FX 0.1% + tax 0% (deferred) = 0.244% yearly
Difference 0.325% yearly. On 100k / $25k over 20 years at 8%: 22k PLN ($5.5k) difference.
6. Comparison Table Most Popular ETFs for Pole (and US alternative)
| Ticker | Name | Acc/Dist | Domicile | TER | TD 2023 | Spread | For whom? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VWCE | FTSE All-World | Acc | IE | 0.07% | 0.08% | 0.07% | Base retirement, IKE / taxable US VT |
| VUSA | S&P 500 | Dist | IE | 0.07% | 0.17% | 0.05% | Avoid in PL taxable |
| VUAA | S&P 500 | Acc | IE | 0.07% | 0.12% | 0.06% | Instead VUSA, for IKE |
| SXR8 | S&P 500 | Acc | IE/DE | 0.07% | 0.10% | 0.06% | Best volume XETRA |
| AGGH | Global Agg Hedged | Acc | IE | 0.10% | 0.20% | 0.12% | Bond part / US BND |
| 4GLD | Physical gold | - | IE | 0.15% | 0.15% | 0.08% | Hedge / GLDM |
| ZPRV | US SCV | Acc | IE | 0.30% | 0.45% | 0.35% | Golden Butterfly / US AVUV |
7. Why Important for Trader?
Because trading is game of 0.1% edge. If you lose 0.3% yearly on wrong ETF structure in long-term portfolio, it’s like having worse trading system.
Second: psychological. Acc ETF doesn’t give you cash. Doesn’t tempt to withdraw dividend for silly trade. Automatically reinvests. Forces discipline trader loves.
8. How to Apply in Practice
Rule IKE/IKZE:
- In IKE/IKZE tax neutral Acc vs Dist, because 0% tax anyway. But choose Acc due lower TD and no need reinvest.
- 100% IKE: VWCE (Acc, IE)
Rule Taxable:
- Always Acc, IE domicile. Minimize current tax and WHT US.
Rule FX Account:
- Hold EUR subaccount at broker. Convert PLN->EUR once large amount in cheaper place (Revolut 0% up to limit) or bank cheaper than broker. Buy ETF in EUR.
- Alternative: XTB has ETF in PLN - check but lower volume, bigger spread. Calculate cheaper.
Step-by-step purchase:
- justetf.com -> screener -> UCITS, Acc, Domicile IE, TER <0.20%
- Check TD 3 years
- Check volume XETRA > 1M daily
- Buy with limit, not market, hours 10-16 when XETRA open.
9. Case Study: 100k PLN / $25k VWCE Acc vs VUSA Dist 15 Years
Assumptions: 100k, 8% gross, yield 1.8%, TER 0.07%, broker XTB, tax 19%.
VWCE Acc:
Yearly total cost 0.25%. Net return 7.75% working fully.
After 15y: $76.7k) before final tax. Tax on profit at sale: (307k-100k)*19%=39.3k. Net: 267,700 PLN (~$66.9k)100000 * 1.0775^{15} = 100000 * 3.07 = 307000 PLN (
VUSA Dist: Yearly dividend drag 1.8%*19%=0.342% + costs 0.25% extra =0.592% total drag. Effective ~7.408%. But additionally each year pay dividend tax, so not compounding. Final value before capital gains tax: ~285k. After tax ~255k net.
Difference: 12,700 PLN ($3,175) benefit Acc. 12.7% initial capital for NOTHING - only choice Acc vs Dist.
10. Beginner Mistakes
- Buying US ETF like SPY because “smaller TER 0.03%”: Forget 15% WHT, USD/PLN FX risk, no Acc and estate tax. TER not everything.
- Choosing Dist ETF “because like dividends”: In PL dividend = immediate tax. Anti-compounding.
- Ignoring domicile: Buying LU ETF on S&P 500 because nice name. Losing 0.22% yearly silently.
- Buying ETF in PLN at XTB with 1% spread when EUR version has 0.05%: Calculate total cost. Sometimes better self-convert.
11. Practical Exercises
Exercise 1: On justetf.com search ETF on MSCI World. Compare 3: Acc IE, Dist IE, Dist LU. Write TER, TD, domicile, yield. Exercise 2: Calculate total cost for your favorite ETF with formula. Add TER+TD_extra+spread/5+FX/5+dividend tax. Exercise 3: Check brokerage account: how much Belka tax paid from dividends in 2024? How much saved with Acc?
12. Checklist
- Know what UCITS is and why not buy SPY/QQQ in US (for EU)
- Understand Acc vs Dist and tax deferral effect
- Check not only TER but also Tracking Difference
- Choose IE domicile for equity ETFs
- Calculated Total Cost for each ETF
- In IKE have 100% Acc, IE
- On taxable have Acc, IE and minimize FX
- Buy with limit during XETRA liquidity hours
Summary and Next Steps
Cheapest ETF not always best, but most tax-expensive always worst.
Formula Total_Cost = TER + TD + Spread + Conversion + Tax is checklist before each purchase. For Pole optimal Acc, IE, XETRA, limit order, EUR account.
Next lesson we enter most emotional topic: gold, BTC and bonds as hedge. Calculate exactly how much gold you need mathematically to hedge equity portfolio and whether BTC is hedge or enemy.
