Intro: Trader Without Portfolio Is Pilot Without Parachute
Imagine trader, call him Kuba. 32 years, 4 years experience, great at Price Action on DAX. Jan 2025 has 180,000 PLN (~$45k) at XTB. That’s ALL savings. Wife pregnant, mortgage 3,500 PLN.
February 2025: -12% correction on DAX, Kuba breaks rules, averages down. Margin call. From 180k left 95k. But 15k must withdraw for life and hospital. Left 80k. Psychology destroyed. To recover to 180k needs +125%. With 80k at 1% risk per trade it’s 18 months perfect trading. Can’t do. Returns to job.
If Kuba had 3-bucket system, he would have lost 40% of trading bucket, not 40% of LIFE.
This chapter is foundation of course 28.

1. Myth of “All-in Trading”
Education industry tells fairy tale: “Quit job, take loan, live from trading”. It’s gambling.
ESMA data 2024: 74-89% retail CFD accounts lose. Average account life <9 months. Reason #1 failure is not strategy but capital pressure - pressure that you MUST earn for rent from this account.
When your trading account = your emergency + retirement, brain goes to survival mode (amygdala hijack). You cannot follow plan.
2. 3-Bucket System
Divide Total_Capital into three mentally and physically separate buckets:
BUCKET 1: Safety (Emergency) - Goal: Survival
- What: Savings account, deposits, money market (e.g. CSH2 ETF)
- How much: 6-12 months expenses
- Rule: NEVER invest it. It’s your life insurance.
- Currency: PLN (or USD) because you spend in it.
BUCKET 2: Trading - Goal: Aggressive growth and cashflow
- What: Brokerage CFD / stock / futures
- How much: Formula result, usually 30-60% capital
- Rule: Here you take risk. You can lose 50% and still live.
- Risk: 0.5-2% per trade CALCULATED FROM THIS BUCKET, not total.
BUCKET 3: Retirement (Freedom) - Goal: Independence in 15-30 years
- What: IKE, IKZE, global ETF VWCE / SXR8, bonds
- How much: 20-40% capital + monthly contributions
- Rule: Don’t touch till 60. It pays for your future.
Foundation Formula
`Trading_Capital = Total_Capital * (1 - p_(emergency) - p_(retirement))
And to check health:
p_{trading} = 1 - p_{emergency} - p_{retirement}
Healthy_allocation: p_(emergency [0.15, 0.30], p_(retirement [0.20, 0.40], p_(trading [0.30, 0.60]
3. How to Calculate Ideal Emergency?
Don’t listen to US gurus “$1000 emergency fund”. In Poland you need more.
Formula:
Emergency_{target} = Monthly_Expenses_{real} * Months_{buffer} * Instability_Factor
- Real expenses: from last 3 months banking app
- Buffer months:
- Employment contract: 6 months
- B2B / self-employed / full-time trader: 12 months
- Sole breadwinner: +3 months
- Instability factor:
- Stable job: 1.0
- Seasonal / trading only income: 1.2-1.5
Example: Spends 6,000 PLN / month (~$1500), self-employed, 1 child.
Emergency = 6000 * 12 * 1.2 = 86400 PLN` (~$21.6k) Round to 90,000 PLN.
Where hold? Table:
| Place | Rate 2025 | Liquidity | Risk | Suggested % of emergency |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Savings account (Velo, ING) | 5.5-7% | Instant | 0 | 40% |
| 3M deposit | 6-7.5% | 3 months | 0 | 30% |
| Money market ETF (CSH2) | 5.8% | T+2 | Minimal | 20% |
| Physical cash PLN | 0% | Instant | Theft/inflation | 10% |
4. Retirement Bucket - Why Can’t Wait
25-year-old putting 500 PLN (~$125) monthly into VWCE at 7% real will have at retirement (60) ~1,080,000 PLN. 35-year-old same: ~530,000 PLN. 10-year delay costs 550k.
Magic of compounding:
FV = PMT * ((1+r)^n - 1/r
5. Allocation Table for Different Stages
| Profile | Age | Total Capital | Emergency % | Retirement % | Trading % | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Student Trader | 22 | 15k PLN ($3.8k) | 20% (3k) | 10% (1.5k) | 70% (10.5k) | Learning |
| Young Employee | 30 | 100k PLN ($25k) | 25% (25k) | 25% (25k) | 50% (50k) | Career start |
| Trader JDG Family | 34 | 300k PLN ($75k) | 30% (90k) | 25% (75k) | 45% (135k) | Our benchmark |
| Experienced 45+ | 45 | 600k PLN ($150k) | 15% (90k) | 45% (270k) | 40% (240k) | Capital protection |
6. Why Important for Trader?
Because changes math of risk of ruin discouragement.
Without buckets, account risk of ruin = life risk of ruin. Max psychological drawdown 20%.
With buckets, you can have 40% drawdown on trading bucket, which is only:
Life_DD = Trading_DD * p_(trading = 40\% * 0.45 = 18\%
You survive. You continue.
7. How to Apply - 30 Days Plan
Day 1-3: Calculate Total_Capital. Log to ALL accounts. Sum. Day 4-7: Calculate real expenses. Set buffer months. Calculate Emergency_target. Day 8-14: Move funds. Open 3 accounts: savings (Velo 7%), brokerage (XTB), IKE (mBank). Transfer. Day 15-30: Set automatic orders: 10% salary to IKE, 10% to emergency until target.
8. Case Study: 250,000 PLN Portfolio - Marek, 34
Marek, 34, JDG IT, monthly expenses 7,000 PLN (~$1750), capital 250k.
Step 1: Emergency target: 7000121.3 = 109,200 PLN → 110k (44%)
Step 2: Retirement: wants 30% because low in IKE → 75k (30%)
Step 3: Trading: Trading = 250000 * (1 - 0.44 - 0.30) = 250000 * 0.26 = 65000 PLN (~$16.25k)
Little? Yes. But it’s REAL capital he can trade without fear of rent. In year will add 40k from JDG and proportions change: emergency full, so 100% new funds go 50/50 trading/retirement.
After year capital 300k, emergency still 110k (36.6%), retirement 100k (33.3%), trading 90k (30%). System self-balances.
9. Beginner Mistakes
- “First multiply, then divide”: Never divide. Inflation and life eats capital. Division MUST be at start.
- Holding emergency in stocks: “VWCE will also grow”. Yes, but -25% in 2022. Emergency cannot drop.
- Borrowing from retirement for trading: “I’ll return after trade”. You won’t. Kills compounding.
- Calculating risk from total not bucket: Risking 1% from 250k = 2500 PLN per trade, but real bucket is 65k. That’s 3.8% risk. Ruin guaranteed.
10. Practical Exercises
Exercise 1: Calculate Total_Capital today. Split to % and PLN + USD. Exercise 2: Calculate your emergency with formula. How much missing? Set plan. Exercise 3: Check last 10 trades. What was real risk % from TRADING bucket, not total?
11. Checklist
- Calculated Total_Capital in PLN & USD
- Calculated Emergency_target with multiplier
- Opened 3 separate accounts / subaccounts
- Transferred funds according to allocation
- Set automatic orders for IKE and emergency
- Changed risk per trade to 1% of TRADING bucket, not total
- Printed 3 buckets sheet above desk
