Most trading career plans end at “I will make 10% a month”. That is not a plan, it is a fantasy. A 12-month plan is an operating schedule with milestones, budgets, cut-off metrics and “if X then Y” decisions. Without it you fall into a loop: challenge → fail → new course → challenge → fail. This lesson turns 12 months into 4 quarters with concrete deliverables that will add up to a CV, a track record and a network.
The plan assumes you start with 0-3 months of history or with a chaotic history and no audit. If you already have 6+ months of verified history, you will shorten phase 1 to 30 days.
Lesson goal and what you will measure
After this lesson you will be able to:
- Break 12 months into 4 quarters: Foundation, Proof, Scaling, Options.
- Define STOP and GO conditions for each path.
- Plan a budget: prop fees, data, tools, a reserve.
- Build a 12-month dashboard with 1 weekly metric that decides whether you continue.
Measures at the end: a 12M plan in a spreadsheet, a budget, a milestone calendar, a list of 5 conditional decisions, a KPI dashboard.
Base assumptions - without them the plan does not work
| Assumption | Minimum value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Capital for learning (lost) | 5000-10000 PLN | Prop fees + data + a reserve of 6M of living costs not from trading |
| Time / week | 10-15h (employed) or 25-30h (full focus) | Less = no statistical sample |
| Journal | Daily, 5 columns, no exceptions | Without a journal there is no audit |
| 1 system per quarter | Max 2 systems in total per account | More = no way to assess the edge |
| Max test risk | 0.5% per trade for the first 90 days | Protects you from blowing up and from emotions |
Budget formula:
Budget_12M = (Monthly_Data_Cost + Platform + Real_Education) *12 + Number_of_Challenges * Challenge_Cost + Reserve_20%
Example: (150+0+100)*12 + 6*300 USD*4 PLN + 2000 PLN = 3000 + 7200 + 2000 = 12200 PLN
Time_Reserve = One_Week_Off_for_Review every 6 weeks - no trading, only analysis of 100 trades
Q1 (Months 1-3): Foundation - measurement and rules
Goal: Build a measurement machine, not profit.
Deliverable:
- 1 chosen system (e.g. a breakout from VWAP, a pullback to EMA21, a range break) + a plan written on 1 A4 page: setup, stop, take, prohibitions.
- Myfxbook + FX Blue verified, auto-update, public.
- A Notion/Excel journal with error tags (min. 10 tags).
- 100 trades on a demo / small real account (0.5% risk) - this is the baseline sample for calculating PF, expectancy, max DD.
End-of-Q1 KPIs:
| Metric | Minimum target | STOP if |
|---|---|---|
| Number of trades | 100 | <60 and no time - reduce the system |
| PF | >1.2 | <1.0 after 100 - change / improve the system |
| Max DD% | <8% | >12% - risk too high |
| Rule discipline | >85% of trades matching the plan | <70% - go back to demo for 14 days |
| Journal | 100% of days filled in | <80% - you do not move to Q2 |
Q1 exercise: For the first time calculate the 12 metrics from lesson 03. Write down your conclusions: the 3 most expensive mistakes.
Q2 (Months 4-6): Proof - challenge and audit
Goal: Prove that you can trade inside prop firm rules.
Deliverable:
- 2-3 attempts at a 15k-25k challenge (not 100k). Goal: learn the daily DD on equity.
- A 1-page monthly report (from lesson 03) for every month.
- CV v1 + LinkedIn with the Q1 metrics.
- A database of 30 firms + 20 value-first messages sent.
Challenge plan:
Risk_Challenge = 0.5% per trade for the first 2 weeks, then 0.75% if PF>1.3
Max_Trades_Day = 2
Max_Loss_Day = -1.5% -> end of day, no exceptions
Prohibited: martingale, holding through high-impact news, increasing the lot after a loss
End-of-Q2 KPIs:
| Metric | Minimum target | GO if |
|---|---|---|
| Challenge passed | 1 funded 15k-25k | Proof of discipline, not of capital size |
| Payout from prop | 1 payout, any amount | Confirms the firm’s liquidity + your process |
| LinkedIn conversion | 30% acceptance, 10% replies | The network starts giving back |
| Track | 6 months verified | Ready to show to a fund |
STOP Q2: If after 3 challenges there is no pass to phase 2 and PF<1.2 - go back to Q1, do not add capital.
Q3 (Months 7-9): Scaling - from 1 to 3 sources
Goal: Turn 1 funded account into 2-3 accounts or activate the second path (investment fund company (TFI) / bank).
Deliverable:
- 2-3 funded accounts on the same system (e.g. 2x25k) OR 1 funded account + 1 quantitative project (e.g. a COT dashboard in Python for an investment fund company (TFI)).
- A 15-minute call with 5 people from priority A (CRM).
- A case study “How I reduced max DD by X%” - 1 Notion page.
Prop scaling strategy:
| Approach | Risk | When |
|---|---|---|
| Buy a 2nd account at the same firm with the same system | High correlations - a ban if you copy 1:1 | Only if you have 2 systems with low correlation |
| Buy an account at 2 different firms | Medium - different DD calculations | Better - diversification of the rulebook |
| Stay with 1 account and increase payouts | Low | Best if your emotions rise |
Max_Portfolio_Exposure = Sum_of_Simultaneous_Risk / Sum_of_Funded_Accounts
Example: 2 accounts of 25k, risk 0.5% each, both positions at the same time = 0.5%+0.5% =1% of the prop portfolio - OK if the daily max is 1.5%
Q4 (Months 10-12): Options - deciding the path for year 2
Goal: Choose 1 main path for the next 12 months on the basis of data.
Scenarios:
| Scenario after 9M | Data | Decision for 12M |
|---|---|---|
| A: Prop works | 2+ funded, 3+ payouts, PF>1.4, DD<7% | Scale to 100k in total, build a “track + process education” page |
| B: Prop does not work, but analytics does | PF 1.0-1.2, but strong Python/SQL projects + network | Shift the focus to a Risk / Analyst internship at an investment fund company (TFI) / bank, trading as a side activity |
| C: Neither prop nor an investment fund company (TFI) | PF<1.1 after 200+ trades, no conversion | A 3-month pause: go back to Q1 with a new system based on volume / order flow, cut costs |
Q4 deliverables:
- A 12M year-2 plan on 1 page: the main path + budget + STOP conditions.
- A 4-page annual report: the 12M equity curve, 12 metrics, 3 mistakes, 3 changes, the plan.
- 3 letters of recommendation / LinkedIn recommendations from people in your network (not bought).
Weekly dashboard - 1 number that decides
Do not track 20 numbers a day. Track 1 weekly indicator: Discipline + the rolling PF of 20 trades.
| Week | Trades | PF 20 | % Matching the plan | Max DD week | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| W1 | 12 | 1.45 | 92% | -1.2% | Continue |
| W2 | 15 | 0.85 | 60% | -2.8% | Review: overtrading? |
| W3 | 8 | 1.2 | 88% | -0.7% | Continue |
Weekly_Rule: If (PF_20 <1.0 and Compliance <80% for 2 weeks in a row) -> Week_Without_Trading_Review_Only
Realistic_Annual_Target = (Avg_R_per_trade * Trades_per_year * Average_Capital * Risk%) - Costs
Example: 0.22R * 600 trades * 25000 USD * 0.6% avg risk = 1980 USD - commission costs ~400 USD = 1580 USD on 25k ~6.3% a year without scaling - a realistic starting point.
When the plan says do not trade
- When you do not have a 12M budget written out and a 20% reserve - do not buy a challenge.
- When in Q1 you did not do 100 trades with a journal - do not move to Q2, do not cheat time.
- When after 2 weeks funded you break the daily DD through emotions - do not trade for 5 days, go back to demo, check the error tags.
- When in Q3 you have 3 funded accounts and you do not sleep - do not scale further, reduce to 1-2, sleep > capital.
- When after 9 months PF<1.1 and there is no progress in networking - do not trade year 2 the same way, choose scenario B or C, change the system or your role.
The mistakes that cost the most
- Buying a large account at the start. 100k in Q1 means a 90% chance of quickly sinking 540 EUR and losing motivation. Start with 15k-25k. The cost of the mistake is 5x lower, the lesson is the same.
- No review week every 6 weeks. 12 months of trading without 2 weeks of pause for analysis is a guarantee of repeating the same mistakes. Plan 8 review weeks in the year.
- Mixing the financial goal with the educational goal. In Q1 the goal is not earnings. If you think about money in Q1, you will increase risk and wipe out your chance for Q2.
- A plan with no STOP conditions. The plan “I will trade until it works” ends in time bankruptcy and financial bankruptcy. Every phase must have a hard condition: if X, then a pause / a change.
Measurable exercise
48h task: your 12M plan
- Copy the budget table and fill it in with your own numbers.
- In a spreadsheet create 4 tabs Q1-Q4 with the columns: Goal, Deliverable, KPI, STOP, Budget.
- Define 5 conditional decisions in the format: IF [metric] THEN [action]. E.g. “IF after Q2 0 funded and PF<1.2 THEN 4 weeks of demo + a change of system to swing + a consultation with a trader from list A”.
- Create a weekly dashboard (a W1-W52 table) with 1 decision metric: the rolling PF 20 + % compliance.
Pass criterion: a spreadsheet with 4 tabs + a budget + 5 IF-THEN decisions + a dashboard. Print it and hang it above your monitor - it is your contract.
Check yourself
- Why does Q1 have a measurement goal and not a financial one? How does that affect the 0.5% risk?
- Calculate the 12M budget with 6 challenges of 25k at 300 USD each and costs of 250 PLN / month. Add a 20% reserve.
- Name the STOP KPIs for Q1 and Q2 - which values cause a return to the previous phase?
- What advantage does scaling through 2 different prop firms have over 2 accounts at one firm?
- What does the 4-page annual report contain and why 4 and not 20 pages?
Frequently asked questions
Can I speed the plan up to 6 months? You can, but the statistics say: traders with a 90-day track record are 3x more likely to fail a funded account in the first month than those with 180 days. 12 months is the minimum learning loop for most people.
What if I have a full-time job? You run Q1 and Q2 on swing trading (1-2 trades a day). Prop does not require sitting for 8h. Choose a system that fits the windows (e.g. the NY open 15:30-17:00). 10-15h a week is enough.
Do I need a mentor? Not a guru mentor, but 2-3 people from list A who will give you 15 minutes of feedback a month on your report. That is 10x cheaper and more effective than a 5000 PLN course.
What if after 12 months I am not funded? You have 12 months of auditable track record, 50+ contacts, a quantitative project and a CV with numbers. That is more than 95% of applicants to an investment fund company (TFI) / bank. You move to path B rather than starting from zero.
