Hook: $12,500 Account Wiped in 8 Minutes - How?
Tuesday March 8 2022 crude CL +12% in 20 minutes after rumor of Russian oil ban. Trader short 2 CL without stop, Initial margin $14,000 for 2 contracts, account $15,000. Price goes 120 to 130 USD = 1010002=$20,000 loss. Account -$5,000 debt. Broker closes at 127, leaves $1,000 and margin call.
Not bad luck. Lack of understanding margin and leverage.
Futures give leverage 1:20-1:50 factory built-in. Leverage is knife – you can cut bread or cut hand.

What Is Margin on Futures?
On stocks margin is loan from broker – you pay interest. On futures margin is good-faith deposit – collateral you will honor contract. No interest. Exchange (CME) sets minimum, broker may add markup.
Not down payment. Not part of price. Collateral you won’t run away.
Example: ES notional $260,000. Initial margin $13,500. Leverage = Notional/Margin=260k/13.5k=19.2x. So you control quarter million USD with 13.5k.
3 Types of Margin
Initial Margin (IM)
How much you need to open position. Set by SPAN (CME). Depends on volatility.
Example ES: IM $13,500. If account $20k you can open 1 ES (left $6.5k free).
Formula IM per contract x number contracts.
Maintenance Margin (MM)
Minimum to hold position open. Usually 90-93% IM. For ES ~$12,350. If capital drops below sum MM (intraday mark-to-market) you get margin call.
Variation Margin (VM)
Daily (and in crisis hourly) P&L settlement. P&L credited/debited real time. If loss free cash drops. VM causes margin call.
Equity formula:
Equity_(t+1=Equity_t + (Price_(t+1-Price_t)× Multiplier × Contracts
When Equity < MM → margin call.
Table IM vs MM
| Contract | Initial | Maintenance | Intraday (broker) | Notional | Leverage IM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ES (S&P) | $13,500 | $12,350 | $500-1,000 broker day | $260k | 19x |
| MES (Micro ES) | $1,350 | $1,235 | $100-150 | $26k | 19x |
| NQ | $19,500 | $17,800 | $1,000-1,500 | $340k | 17x |
| CL | $8,000 | $7,300 | $500-1,000 | $80k | 10x |
| GC | $11,000 | $10,000 | $500-1,000 | $200k | 18x |
| NG | $3,000 | $2,750 | $500 | $25k | 8x |
Intraday margin: Brokers offer day trading discount (e.g., ES $500 instead of $13.5k) if close before 5pm ET. Marketing dangerous – leverage rises to 260k/0.5k=520x! 1 point against and account gone.
Real Leverage
Nominal = Notional/Margin. Real depends on your account:
Leverage_(real = (Notional_(position/Capital_(account
Example: Account 40k PLN ~$10k USD, 1 ES $260k notional → real leverage 26x! Means ES move 3.8% (100 pts) =100% account.
Professional keeps real leverage 2-5x max.
Formula for Number of Contracts - Survival Math
Most important formula in futures:
Number_(contracts = (Capital × %Risk/Stop_(ATR × TickValue
Or simpler:
Size = (Max loss PLN/Points stop × Point value
Example: Account 50,000 PLN ~$12,500, want risk 1%=500 PLN ~$125 per trade on ES.
Stop based on 15min ATR: ATR=15 pts. Want stop 1.5 ATR=22.5 pts round 20.
Loss on 1 ES with 20 pts=2050=$1,000 ~4,000 PLN – too much (8x risk). For MES multiplier $5 →205=$100 ~400 PLN – close to 500 PLN → can take 1 MES.
So:
Number_(MES=(50 000 × 0.01/20 × 5 × 4 = (500/400=1.25 arrow 1\ contract
(FX 4 PLN/USD in denominator, TickValue USD but simplified).
Margin Call Mechanism Step-by-Step
Day 0: Account $20k buy 1 ES IM $13.5k left $6.5k free.
Day 1: ES down 50 pts (200 ticks*$12.50=$2,500 loss). Equity=$20k-2.5k=$17.5k. Maintenance for 1 ES $12,350 – still above so OK.
Day 2: ES down another 80 pts ($4,000). Equity $13.5k. Now free=Equity-IM? At $13.5k equity broker has IM $13.5k – at edge. Maintenance $12.35k – still $1.15k above, no call but close.
Day 3: ES down 20 pts $1,000. Equity $12.5k. Now above MM $12.35k? $12.5k>$12.35k still breathes.
Day 4: ES down 10 pts $500. Equity $12k <MM $12,350 → MARGIN CALL. Broker email: add to IM $13.5k so add $1.5k or we close.
If not add within 24h (or intraday 1h with aggressive brokers) broker closes at market – often worst price.
With intraday margin $500: already at -6 pts on ES you have margin call – broker auto-closes.
Why It Matters For Trader?
Because futures without margin knowledge is like driving 300 km/h without brakes. 90% accounts die not because strategy bad but overleverage + no stop + margin call.
- Professional: Account $50k trades 2 MES risk 0.5% real leverage 1x.
- Amateur: Account $50k (~$12.5k) trades 3 ES on intraday margin $500 – real leverage 62x, 1 trade = game over.
Market Example: 50,000 PLN Account and ES
Data: Account 50k PLN (~$12.5k). ES tick $12.50 daily ATR ~80 pts.
Scenario A – Reasonable (MES):
- Risk 1%=500 PLN
- Stop 20 pts=20*5=$100~400 PLN for MES
- Position 1 MES real leverage: Notional MES=5,200*5=$26k account $12.5k →2.08x
- Even 3 losses in row: -1,200 PLN=-2.4% account – survivable.
Scenario B – Suicidal (Big ES + broker intraday margin):
- Broker offers $500 intraday margin so trader takes 5 ES (!) because 5*500=2,500<$12.5k
- Notional 5*260k=$1.3M real leverage 104x
- Stop 20 pts on 5 ES=20505=$5,000~20,000 PLN=40% account!
- Not using stop because “it will bounce”. ES down 30 pts=30505=$7,500~30k PLN – 60% in 10 minutes.
Not fiction – stories daily.
Case Study: Volmageddon Feb 5 2018
VIX +115% one day. S&P down -4% (ES 100 pts).
Fund LJM Preservation and Growth – selling VIX puts via futures and options. $800M AUM leverage 10x via futures. When VIX exploded Initial Margin on VIX futures rose from $8k to $28k overnight – broker demanded additional $300M Variation Margin in 1 day. Fund lacked cash – bankruptcy -80% in 24h liquidation.
Many retail on XIV (inverse VIX ETN) – Credit Suisse closed ETN after 96% overnight drop – gaps margin call on linked futures accounts.
Lesson: Overnight gaps + IM increase can kill even if long-term right. Always keep 50-70% account cash free from margin.
How to Apply
Survival rules:
- Never use intraday margin for risk calc. Always use exchange Initial.
- Free cash >=60% capital. So account 50k PLN (~12.5k USD) used margin max $5k USD. On ES max 3 MES not more.
- Position formula + ATR not fixed. ATR ES 15min 10 pts stop min 1.5 ATR=15 pts.
- Check margin before report. CME raises margin 20-50% before elections, FOMC, war.
- Keep USD/PLN buffer: Account PLN margin USD – USD/PLN drop can increase required deposit PLN.
PLN calculator (ready):
Capital PLN: 50,000
Risk %: 1% → 500 PLN
FX USD/PLN: 4.0
Contract: MES point $5 stop 20 pts → loss USD 100 →400 PLN
Number=500/400=1.25 →1 contract
Real leverage=(5200*5)/12500=2.08x OK
Auto stop: Set bracket order: entry + stop market + target limit so not hold manually.
Common Mistakes
- Taking 5-10 micro contracts because “micro small”. 10 MES=1 big ES=$260k notional.
- Holding overnight on intraday margin. Broker auto-closes at 5pm ET with slippage.
- Counting profit without margin: “Earn $100 daily on $500 margin=20% daily!” Forget -10 trades in row.
- No knowledge Variation Margin hourly. In crisis brokers require intra-day margin call – must add in 1h.
- Averaging losing futures (martingale). With 20x leverage second average is 100% margin call.
- Ignoring IM increase. CME raised IM on NG from $2.5k to $6k Feb 2021 – accounts blew without price move.
- Account PLN valuation USD/EUR. Loss on contract $500 is 2000 PLN but at 4.5 rate 2250 PLN – 12.5% more than assumed.
Practical Exercises
Exercise 1: Account 30,000 PLN (~$7,500). ES IM $13.5k – how many ES can open per exchange? (7.5k/13.5k=0.55 →0). How many MES? (7.5k/1.35k=5.5 →5 theoretically but reasonable 1-2).
Exercise 2: You have 2 MCL (micro oil) long. Used margin $1,400 account $6,000. CL down $3 (3100=$300 per MCL total $600). New equity $5,400. Margin call? Maintenance 2$650=$1,300 equity $5,400 >$1,300 – no but free cash shrinking.
Exercise 3: Calc real leverage for account 100k PLN (~$25k) and position 2 ES+1 NQ. Notional 2*260k+340k=860k leverage=860k/25k=34.4x extreme! Reduce to 2 MES+1 MNQ=86k/25k=3.44x OK.
Exercise 4: Simulate margin call: Account $10k 1 ES IM $13.5k can’t open. Broker gives intraday $500 open 2 ES ($1k). ES down 10 pts=$500 per ES=$1,000 loss=10% account. Equity $9k. Now EOD need $27k IM for 2 ES – broker closes everything.
Checklist Before Entering
- Know Initial and Maintenance for contract at CME not only intraday broker
- Calculated size: (Capital*%Risk)/(Stop*TickValue) – max 1-2%
- Real leverage <5x (notional/capital)
- Free cash >=60% account after opening
- Know intraday cutoff (e.g., 5pm ET) – won’t get auto-closed
- Checked CME margin hike before event (elections FOMC)
- Account PLN – included USD/PLN rate in loss calc
- Set hard stop market not mental
- Not averaging losers on futures
Summary and Next Steps
Initial Margin is entry deposit, Maintenance minimum to hold, Variation daily P&L adjustment. Intraday margin is marketing 500x leverage that kills accounts. Formula Number_contracts=(Capital*%Risk)/(Stop_ATR*TickValue) is your life insurance.
Professional lives because 70% cash free and leverage 2-3x. Amateur dies because leverage 50x and thinks $500 margin is cheap.
Next final lesson: spread strategies – calendar, inter-market, crack and crush – how to professionally reduce margin and volatility trading price difference not direction.
Homework: For week on MES demo calc real leverage and free cash before each trade. Goal: never <60% free.
