Closing a position over the week and the weekend is the moment when control passes to mathematics you cannot see: Monday gap risk, a triple swap on Wednesday, a widening spread and no ability to react. In day trading none of this exists. In swing, the weekend is a separate risk factor that has to be written into the plan, just like the SL.

This lesson closes the course: you will learn to calculate the cost of the weekend and build rules for holding through the weekend that protect R.

The anatomy of a swing trader’s weekend

When you close the laptop at 17:30 on Friday, the market does not stop existing. Four things happen:

  1. Gap risk: Monday’s open can be far from Friday’s close because of weekend news, elections, conflicts, decisions.
  2. No ability to react: the SL will not trigger during the weekend. It is only filled after the gap, often with significant slippage.
  3. The cost of time (swap/financing): you hold through 2 weekend days, but you pay for financing (on FX a triple swap on Wednesday often covers the weekend, but on stock/index CFDs you pay for every day).
  4. Spread widening: at 22:55 on Friday and 00:05 on Monday the spread can be 3-5x wider. An SL close to the price can be caught by the spread, not by the price.
Weekend risk = Probability of a gap > SL * Average gap size
You will not calculate it perfectly, but you can measure it historically:

Gap % = (Monday Open - Friday Close) / Friday Close * 100%
Calculate it for your instrument over the last 2 years: average gap, max gap, % of gaps >1% and >2%

How to measure gap risk

A measuring exercise (in Excel/Sheets):

  1. Download D1 data (open/close) for the instrument.
  2. For every Monday, calculate the weekend gap.
  3. Calculate:
  • Average absolute gap (%)
  • Max positive and negative gap in %
  • % of weeks where the gap >1 ATR D1
  • % of weeks where the gap > your standard SL
Typical instrumentAverage gapMax gap over 2 years% of gaps >1%
EUR/USD major FX0.05-0.15%0.8-1.5%3-5%
WIG20 / DAX0.3-0.6%3-5%15-20%
A large WIG20 stock0.4-0.9%5-12% (earnings)20-30%
A small cap stock0.8-1.5%10-25%35-45%
BTC / 24/7 cryptoNo weekend gap, but weekend volatility--

Conclusion: you can hold FX through the weekend more freely. Individual stocks need a buffer.

Swap, the triple swap and financing - the mathematics

Forex:

  • Swap is charged at 22:00 UTC (23:00 Polish time).
  • Wednesday -> 3x swap (for the weekend).
  • A positive swap: you receive it, a negative one: you pay it.
  • On a 1 lot EUR/USD position a swap of -15 PLN / day = -105 PLN per week (7 days). If your target is 400 PLN (1.5R), 105 PLN is 26% of the target.

CFDs on stocks/indices:

Daily cost = Position value * (LIBOR/WIBOR/SOFR + margin) / 360
You pay for every day, including Saturday/Sunday at most CFD brokers.
Example: A 30k PLN position, rate 8% = 30k*0.08/360=6.66 PLN per day.
Friday->Monday = 3 days = 20 PLN of extra cost vs closing on Friday.

Decision template: hold through the weekend or close:

Step 1: How much R do you have right now?
<0.5R and it is Friday -> consider closing, because the weekend risk / reward is poor
>1R and the W1 trend is running -> hold with the SL at BE

Step 2: Calculate the cost of the weekend:
Weekend cost = 3 days * daily cost + (Average gap * Position value * probability of an adverse gap)
If the weekend cost >30% of the open profit, cut 50% before the weekend.

Step 3: A buffer for the gap:
Weekend SL = max(Your technical SL, 1.8*ATR D1 from the Friday price)
If the technical SL is tighter than 1.8 ATR, widen it for the weekend or reduce the position.

4 rules for holding through the weekend

Rule 1: Friday is a day for managing, not for opening. Never open a new swing after 15:00 on Friday. New positions only Tuesday-Thursday. Friday is for reducing risk.

Rule 2: The profit must pay for the weekend. If you hold through the weekend, the position must be at least +0.8R in profit with the SL at breakeven. Otherwise you are paying for risk without a cushion.

Rule 3: Weekend limits.

  • Max 3 positions held through the weekend at the same time.
  • Max 1 position in a single stock (not an index) through the weekend if it has earnings <10 days away.
  • If there are elections / a referendum / a geopolitical decision over the weekend - close stocks and indices, keep at most FX with an SL of 2.5 ATR.

Rule 4: An alert, not the market at the weekend. Turn off crypto quotes and news at the weekend if you are holding GPW/FX positions. You will not change the position. You will check on Monday at the open. If you are afraid to open the laptop on Monday - the position is too big.

Monday open scenarios

Prepare 3 ready-made reactions for Monday 8:55 before the GPW open / 00:05 for FX:

Scenario A: A gap with the trend of +0.8 ATR
Action: Hold, move the SL to BE+0.3R if it has not been moved yet. Do not add on the open.

Scenario B: A gap against you of -1.2 ATR, but still above the SL
Action: Do not close in a panic. Check the W1 structure. If the W1 trend is running, hold. If the D1 close confirms a break of structure - close on the close.

Scenario C: A gap against you and the SL was jumped (slippage)
Action: Accept the enlarged loss. Record the real slippage in R. If the slippage >0.5R, cut your next positions in that instrument by 30% or avoid holding it through the weekend.
The formula for a real result with a gap:
Real R = (Monday open price - Entry price - costs) / (Entry price - Original SL price)
If Real R = -1.4 instead of -1.0, the -0.4R difference is the cost of the gap. Track it separately.

When the plan says do not trade

  1. When there is a binary event over the weekend, such as a presidential election, a referendum, an OPEC decision or US CPI on Monday at 14:30. Do not hold new swings through a weekend like that. It is roulette.
  2. When your position has an SL of 0.8 ATR and the average weekend gap is 1.1 ATR. Mathematically the SL will be jumped more often than it works. Widen the SL or reduce the position, or close it.
  3. When you have an open position at -0.4R on Friday and you want to hold it “because it might bounce”. Holding a loss through the weekend without a cushion is double risk. Close it or cut it to 0.3% risk.
  4. When on Friday after 22:00 you see a spread widened 5x and you want to enter “because it is cheap”. Do not trade on the weekend spread. That is not a price.
  5. When the counter shows 60h of a weekend position with no ability to react, and you feel anxiety. Anxiety = the position is too big. Cut it so that the weekend is emotionally neutral. The test: do you fall asleep peacefully on Sunday? If not, reduce.

The mistakes that cost the most

Holding everything through every weekendTwice a year a -4% gap on an index wipes out 2 months of RA limit of 3 positions through the weekend, the +0.8R and BE rule

A measurable exercise

Title: Audit 20 weekends

  1. Pick 2 instruments (e.g. EUR/USD and a WIG20 stock).
  2. For the last 20 weekends, calculate the size of the Monday gap in % and in ATR D1.
  3. For every gap, note whether it would have been with or against a long and a short.
  4. Calculate: average gap, max gap, % of gaps >1 ATR, which SL (in ATR) would have protected you from 90% of the gaps.
  5. For the same weekends calculate the cost of holding a 10k PLN CFD position at 8% financing: Friday-Monday.

Pass criterion: A table of 20 weekends + the calculated minimum weekend SL + the average weekend cost in PLN and R.

Check yourself

  1. Why is the triple swap on Wednesday important for an FX swing trader?
  2. How do you calculate the weekend gap in % and in ATR?
  3. Give 2 differences in weekend risk between EUR/USD and a small GPW company.
  4. You have a position at +0.3R on Friday 17:00 and the company reports earnings on Monday. What do you do according to the rules of this lesson?
  5. Explain the formula for real R after a weekend gap and why slippage should be tracked separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can weekend risk be avoided completely? Yes - by closing everything on Friday. But then you are not a swing trader, just a day trader. The goal is management, not elimination. You manage it through: position size, an SL buffer, a limit on the number of positions and an event filter.

Does crypto have weekend risk? There is no gap, because it trades 24/7, but there is weekend volatility - volume drops and moves can be more violent. An SL can have more slippage on Sunday evening. The sizing rules are identical.

My broker widens the spread before the weekend and takes out my SL. What should I do?

  1. Do not hold an SL 5 pips from the price on Friday 22:50. 2. Use an SL on the D1 close (close only) if the broker allows it, or an alert + a manual close on the open. 3. Reduce leverage so that the SL is further than 2 ATR from the Friday close.

Educational material. It is not investment advice. The weekend is a real cost and a real gap risk - always measure historical gaps and read your broker’s swap/financing specification before holding.

End of Course 19. What next? You have the complete set: holding for weeks, D1/W1 setups, carry/earnings/seasonality, sizing, anti-shakeout and weekend risk. Your next 30 swing positions are a laboratory. Measure net R, time in the market, the cost of the weekend and the % of premature exits. Only those numbers will tell you whether you have a system.
